"PADDLE SPORTS DAY 2000" Saturday March 11th from 11am -
4pm at Lake Pleasant regional Park. All our canoe and kayak boat
manufactures will be at the lake for you to demo all their boats. their
will also be free paddling clinics and demos and we will also be
raffeling off a Yak Board from Ocean Kayak. The event is free but there
is a $5.00 entry fee into the park.

The second event is "THE BANFF MOUNTIAN FILM FESTIVAL" Friday, March
17th from 6:30pm - 10:00pm at the Arizona Science Center. REI is once
again honored to bring back to Phoenix the worlds best mountain films.
Whether it's shooting the rapids, climbing a peak, or cranking turns in
deep powder, the Best of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour
promises to inspire and get your adrenalin up.There will also be a
Mountain Book Festival with local authors, a cash bar, food and lots of
free giveaways. The event is a charity event to raise money for valley
youth programs. There are less then 70 tickets left. you can pick them
up at either store or order them by phone at 480-967-5494. Tickets are
$20.00.

The Right Stuff: Gearing up for Safe Paddling
Tuesday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m.

There's a lot to choose from when you decide to start paddling. Your safety, fun and peace of mind depend on choosing the right gear. Peter Zwagerman from Permagrin Canoeing and Kayaking Outfitters and Paddling School will share tips for getting started in recreational, white water and touring kayaking. You will learn techniques for choosing the appropriate kayak, PFD, helmet, shoes, clothing and more to ensure a safe and fun paddling adventure. Zwagerman will also show slides and "test" your gear selection savvy.

What happens if you get hurt out in the backcountry, miles from help? Naturopathic medical student and certified wilderness medicine instructor Kirk Slagel will give you the basics on backcountry first aid that you need to know before you venture out. You'll learn about patient assessment, musculoskeletal and soft-tissue injuries, splinting and hypothermia.

In part three of this series on basic bike maintenance, REI Master Technician Tom Hess will uncover the "wheel truth" about how to take care of your bike's wheels. He'll make things like spoke installation, touch truing your wheels, adjusting your hubs and replacing wheel bearings look easy, or at least possible. Bring in questions for this graduate of Barnett Bicycle Institute's Master Technician Program.

Sonoran Desert National Park Project

Join Executive Director Lyn Wilson and author and Project Coordinator Bill Broyles of the Sonoran Desert Park Project. This non-profit organization works to preserve ì5000 square miles of silenceî in Southern Arizona. Find out more about the proposal to combine Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge and the Barry Goldwater Training Range to make a huge park for recreation and preservation. They will show you this pristine desert area through many slides from Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Jack Dykinga, a supporter and Board member.

Nature Through the Lens of Gary Ladd

Join Arizona Highways magazine contributing photographer Gary Ladd for a rare look through his lens at the wilderness interior of the Grand Canyon, the pristine sandstone landscapes surrounding Lake Powell and the slickrock terrain of southern Utah. Since 1971, Ladd has completed nearly 60 trips into the Grand Canyon and carried both of his cameras, lenses, tripod and film on all of these. Come hear and see how this award-winning photographer has captured this unique and rugged landscape for the book, Grand Canyon: Time Below the Rim and numerous magazines.

2000 Paddle Sports Day

Join us for a fun-filled day on the water! Representatives from Dagger, Perception, Mad River, Old Town, Wilderness Systems, Navarro, Ocean Kayak, Nimbus, Werner, Thule and Yakima will be there with their boats, paddles and equipment. Try out a sleek touring kayak, a family canoe, a nimble whitewater boat or anything in between. Knowledgeable REI and Desert Mountain Sports staff members will be providing assistance throughout the day. Free clinics provided by Permagrin Outfitters and Canyons & Coastlines kayak school. Banff Mountain Film Festival

REI is once again honored to bring to Phoenix the 24th Annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. In November of 1999, the Banff Mountain Film Festival viewed over 300 films and videos from around the world. The World Tour features the winning films from every category. Meet local authors and publishers, talk to local wilderness groups, see animals from the Phoenix Zoo, enjoy a cash bar, food and lots of free door prizes.

You can purchase your tickets at either the Paradise Valley or Tempe REI stores. Tickets are limited so don't wait! The cost for the festival is $20 for REI and Phoenix Zoo members and $25 for non-members. All proceeds will be going the Phoenix Zoo's Night Camp Program for kids. REI and the Arizona Climbing & Adventure School (ACAS) have partnered to present, Indoor & Outdoor Rock Climbing Course ñ 101. The two-part beginning rock climbing course includes an indoor session at Paradise Valley REI (2 &Mac189; hours) and an outdoor session (6 hours) climbing in the McDowell Mountains the next day. You'll learn the basics of climbing, knots, belaying, rope handling, rappel techniques, climbing ethics and judgment, responsibility and safety. Includes equipment loan. Organ Pipe Cactus Natl. Monument Public Scoping Open House
